What is your understanding of NATIONALISM?
  • What does it mean?
  • Why is it significant?
  • What role does it play in the growth of society?

Can you think of any instances of Nationalism in your life? What does Nationalism look like?

Think especially about the idea that our society grows in a particular way because of the influence of Nationalism on people. What can you attribute to desire of people to improve their culture or heritage?

Many of you have suggested that inventions and technology are important byproducts of Nationalism. In ONE PAGE, write:

What is the most important technological advancement of your lifetime and why you believe that.

Examine the painting below. Make sure your I See/It Means notes the different activities/tasks being performed.

What do you think the artist's perspective is? What is his point of view?

Remember, a theme throughout our studies has been Nationalism and the role of Nationalism as society has grown and changed. Keep this in mind as we continue our study of industrialization.

Don't be laissez-faire!

This unit on industrialization is going to be heavy on economics, so it may at times be confusing. I would recommend asking as many questions as you have!

Examine this graphic to get a sense of what the process of industrialization looks like. We are studying this because it is an ongoing process; can you think of NON-industrialized nations and areas of the world? What do they have in common?

As you can tell, geography plays an important role in industrialization. What else can you infer to be important to the cycle of industrialization?

Read the box on page 236 (reproduced below), HISTORY AND ECONOMICS.
History_and_Economics.jpg

Take notes in a Chart as shown below.

FoP_Table.jpg
Knowing what you now know about factors of production, can you think of a present-day factor of production not mentioned in the reading?
PREDICT: Write two paragraphs on how you think the factors of production will continue to change. What will they look like in the future?

Read Section 1 and answer the questions below.

  1. Explain, in detail, what effect changes in Agriculture had on the industrial revolution?
  2. Predict: what effect might the shift from Cottage industries to factories have on the lives of textile workers and on towns and cities.
  3. Evaluate how you think people justified the use of children doing hard labor in coal mines

Read the secondary source on page 238 and answer the questions.

Read about Steamships on page 240. What can you infer are some of the benefits of steamships?

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
If steamships are a product of industrialization, what are the products of steamships? Where do steamships fit into the cycle of industrialization? What is their role? What does that mean about the process of industrialization?

INDUSTRIALIZATION SPREADS

Read about the spread of industrialization and take notes in a web like the one below.

PROCESSING (in full sentences):
  • What contributed to the spread of industry from Great Britain?
  • What prevented it?
  • How do you think the spread of industrialization impacted Nationalism? <-One paragraph

To further understand the spread of industrialization, review this graphic:external image FC116.png

SUMMARIZE EVERYTHING YOU KNOW ABOUT INDUSTRIALIZATION UP TO THIS POINT.
Create a thesis statements based on theses prompts:

1. Identify and explain the key factors that led to the development of the Industrial Revolution first in England

2. The industrial revolution had a major impact on how people worked and lived. Explain the major advantage and disadvantage of the Industrial Revolution.

Refer to this document:

REMEMBER, WE SAID THINGS IN THIS UNIT WILL BE HEAVY ON ECONOMICS. WE STUDY SOCIAL SCIENCES AS WELL AS HISTORY IN THIS CLASS, SO IT IS IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THE ROLE OF ECONOMICS BOTH TODAY AND IN THE EARLY PHASES OF INDUSTRIALIZATION.

What ideas about economics do you think would spring up as a result of industrialization?
What ideas would be in competition with each other?

LAPTOP RESEARCH!!!!

1. Log in to Google Docs
2. Click "Create" -> "Doc"
3. Click "Share" in the upper right corner. A dialog box will open, type my e-mail address: mraufierohistory@gmail.com, and in the drop down menu give me Commenting Rights.
4. Name your document "(Last name, First name) pros and cons"
5. Click the tab "Table" and insert a 2 x 8 table (2 columns wide, 8 rows long)
6. Label the first column "Pros" and the second column "Cons"
7. In the line above the table type the word "Capitalism"
8. Below the table hit Enter and repeat steps 5 and 6
9. Above your second table, type the word "Communism"

Now you will complete research on these two economic systems. At the end of your document find a political cartoon that supports each system (one that is pro-capitalist and one that is pro-communist). Explain WHY you have chosen each cartoon.

Now take a stand:

Which economic system should be supported for a country? Why??

Daily Life in the 1800's

What was life like in the city during the age of industrialization?
What developments affected the arts, leisure time, and education?
Can you make connections from the past to your world today?

Read Cities Grow and Change, page 274-276 and respond to the following:

1. How did cities grow and change in the late 1800's?
2. Why did people migrate to cities?
3. Describe the conditions that made cities more livable.

Read Education, Leisure, and the Arts on pages 276-278 and take notes in a chart like the one below.

What developments affected changes in the arts, leisure time, and education?

PROCESSING ACTIVITY!

Taking everything we have learned about the industrial age so far, write a 1.5-2 page typed response (12 pt, times new roman, 1 inch margins OR 500-750 words) to the following:

Considering what we have learned about "Revolution," both in France and in Haiti, do the changes in technology, transportation, education, et al. qualify as a "revolution?" How does Nationalism tie into these ideas of Revolution? Support your response with relevant details from our course of study.

Please note that this is not going to be an essay on the French and Haitian Revolutions. We have already done that! Rather, you will be writing about our study of the industrial age and the process and results of industrialization. When you have come to a conclusion (that is, when you have decided how you want to answer the question), make sure you have a strong thesis that takes a stand! Be assertive in your writing, and do not use first person.
